Lithuanian Money, Exchange Rates and Bank Notes

  • The Legal Tender (Currency) in Lithuania is Lithuanian Litas or Lits which are denoted internationaly as LTL and localy as lt. No other currency is generally accepted.According to the current data, the most favourable period for Lithuania to join the euro area will begin from 2010.
  • Can be withdrawn from from any of the many cash machines (auto banks) which are distributed around the towns and cities. All major credit cards are accepted by the machines.
  • Cash can also be obtained via "Cash Back" when paying by card in many of the major supermarkets
  • 1 Euro = 3.4528 Litas (Official Pegged Rate)
  • 24/7 (24 Hour / 7 Days) Cash exchange is available at 'Parex Bank', Geležinkelio str. 6, 02001 Vilnius. It is situated in a bulding adjacent to the railway station in Vilnius. The exchange works even on holidays and they offer some of the best exchange rates with lowest commision.

  • The 10 Litas Bank Note (about 3 Euro)
    • (The designer of the banknote is Giedrius Jonaitis. Size of the note: 135mmx65 mm.)
10 Litas Bank Note - Front

Front. On the right side of the banknote are the portraits of the pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas, Lithuanian national heroes. At the top is the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA), and at the bottom of the banknote DESIMT LITU (TEN LITAS). On the left of the portraits is the year of issue 2001, the signature of the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania and the inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE BANK OF LITHUANIA). The front of the banknote bears orange, green, violet and blue colours.
10 Litas Bank Note Reverse Back. The drawing on the back represents the plane "LITUANICA" above the Atlantic Ocean, outlines of the American and European continents and the waves of the ocean. At the bottom of the banknote is the inscription DEŠIMT LITŲ (TEN LITAS). The back of the banknote bears light brown, violet and blue colours.

Front.On the right side of the banknote is the portrait of Maironis (Prelate Jonas Maciulis (1862–1932)), a famous Lithuanian poet and bard of the Lithuanian national rebirth. At the top is the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA), and at the bottom of the banknote DVIDESIMT LITU (TWENTY LITAS). On the left of the portrait is the year of issue 2007, the signature of the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania and the inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE BANK OF LITHUANIA). The front of the banknote bears brown, violet, light brown and blue colours.
20 Litas Bank Note - Reverse Back.The Statue of Liberty against the background of Vytautas Magnus Museum of War History and Belfry. At the bottom of the banknote is the inscription DVIDESIMT LITU (TWENTY LITAS). The back of the banknote bears violet, yellow and light blue colours.

50 Litas Bank Note - Front Front.On the right side of the banknote is the portrait of Jonas Basanavicius (1851-1927), patriarch of Lithuania, scientist, politician, signatory of the Act of Independence of 16 February 1918. At the top is the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA), and at the bottom of the banknote PENKIASDESIMT LITU (FIFTY LITAS). To the left of the portrait is the year of issue 2003, the signature of the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania and the inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE BANK OF LITHUANIA). The front of the banknote bears brown, light orange, green and pale blue colours.
50 Litas Bank Note - Reverse Back.Vilnius Cathedral and Belfry, Monument to Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania, Gediminas Castle Tower and the Hill of Three Crosses. At the bottom of the banknote is the inscription PENKIASDESIMT LITU (FIFTY LITAS). The back of the banknote bears brown, light orange, green and pale blue colours.

    • (The designer of the banknote is Rytis Valantinas. Size of the note: 135 mmx65 mm.)

100 Litas Bank Note - Front
Front.On the right of the banknote there is a portrait of Simonas Daukantas (1793–1864), the initiator of the national rebirth movement, historian, who has written the first history of Lithuania in the Lithuanian language. There are the inscriptions LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA) at the top and SIMTAS LITU (ONE HUNDRED LITAS) at the bottom of the banknote. At the left edge of the banknote vertically runs the inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE BANK OF LITHUANIA) alongside with his signature and the year of issue 2000. The front of the banknote contains green, light brown and bluish colours.
100 Litas Bank Note - Reverse Back. The picture of the Old Town of Vilnius, one of the largest in the Middle and East Europe, is presented on the back of the note. In the centre an architectural ensemble of Vilnius University, founded in 1579, with St. John's church and the belfry is depicted. There are the inscriptions LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA) at the top and SIMTAS LITU (ONE HUNDRED LITAS) at the left edge of the note. The back of the banknote contains green, brown and bluish colours.


  • The 200 Litas Bank Note (about 58 Euro)
    • (The designer of the banknote is Rytis Valantinas. Size of the note: 135 mmx65 mm.)

200 Litas Bank Note - Front
Front.On the right of the banknote there is a portrait of Vydunas (Vilhelmas Storosta, 1868-1953), a prominent Lithuanian philosopher, writer, poet, playwright, musician, pedagogue and culture educator. Vydunas was spreading idealistic philosophy and ideas of humanism through his works. There are the inscriptions LIETUVOS BANKAS (Bank of Lithuania) at the top and DU SIMTAI LITU (Two hundred Litas) at the bottom of the banknote. At the left edge of the banknote vertically runs the inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania) alongside with his signature and year of issue 1997. The front of the banknote contains green, bluish and violet colours.
200 Litas Bank Note - Front Back. On the left of the banknote an image of Klaipeda lighthouse erected in 1796 is depicted. After the reconstruction in 1819 the lighthouse became 29.2 m of height and its beams of 45 000 candlelight strength could cast light on the vast area of sea stretched up to 35 kilometres. In 1937 a radiogoniometric station was installed in the lighthouse. The lighthouse was not only a symbol of Klaipeda city but a main accent of the town as well willingly attended by tourists. Klaipeda lighthouse ceased to function before the World War II and has not survived today. The back of the banknote contains violet, greenish, brown and yellow colours.


  • The 500 Litas Bank Note (about 145 Euro)
    • (The designer of the banknote is Giedrius Jonaitis. Size of the note: 147 mmx70 mm.)


Front.On the right of the banknote there is a portrait of Vincas Kudirka (1858-1899), a Lithuanian writer, participant of the national rebirth movement and author of the Lithuanian national anthem. At the top is the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA), and at the bottom of the banknote, PENKI SIMTAI LITU (FIVE HUNDRED LITAS). At the left edge of the banknote runs a vertical inscription LIETUVOS BANKO VALDYBOS PIRMININKAS (CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF THE BANK OF LITHUANIA) alongside with his signature and the year of issue 2000. The front of the banknote contains red, violet and brown colours.

Back. Against the background of a view of Lithuanian nature, the back of the note contains an image of the Bell of the Freedom of Lithuania with the inscription: "Thou shall ring through the centuries to the children of Lithuania: he who does not defend freedom is not worthy of it". At the top on the note runs the inscription LIETUVOS BANKAS (BANK OF LITHUANIA), and PENKI SIMTAI LITU (FIVE HUNDRED LITAS) at the right edge of the note. The back of the banknote contains red, dark red and green brown colours.
